The State of Montana’s Museum of Agriculture, the Museum of the Northern Great Plains, documents the last one hundred years of life on the vast Montana plains. The story of the homesteader is told and the Strand Gallery displays the Smithsonian Hornaday Bison.
The Smithsonian Hornaday group were collected in 1886 by William T. Hornaday for the National Museum in Washington D.C. and put on exhibition in 1887.
During their seventy years of prominent display, the big bull was the model for several national symbols and government issues. Coins and paper currency, the Great Seal of the Department of the Interior, postage stamps, and the National Park Service badge bear the likeness of the big bull in the Hornaday Collection.
Displays throughout the museum allow you to explore the hardships as well as the triumphs of three generations of families living on these Northern Great Plains.
