South Dakota’s largest city, Sioux Falls, sits in the southeast region of the state, just a short drive from the Lewis and Clark Trail. No visit to Sioux Falls is complete without a stop at Falls Park, the city’s namesake. The park features a triple-cascading waterfall from the Big Sioux River that flows through the 123-acre park. Sioux Falls has a rich art scene that is most notably known for the sculptures that make up SculptureWalk, and the Arc of Dreams. Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of options to enjoy including the 30-mile Big Sioux River Recreation Trail, along with Good Earth State Park and Great Bear to name a few.

“The Missouri near Hardy Creek. This bridge appeared in “The Untouchables” and was supposedly on the Canada-US border. The site is much better than the movie was!”

Very close to this bridge (https://maps.app.goo.gl/NCsRabRAFoAPu1RV8) is the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. Here’s some more information about the area to help plan a potential visit!:

“The scenic Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest stretches 2.8-million acres through central and north-central Montana. The Forest is comprised of island mountain ranges bisected by the Continental Divide and Missouri River and includes 6 ranger districts: Lincoln, Helena, Townsend, Judith - Musselshell, Rocky Mountain, and Belt Creek - White Sulphur Springs and 2 Forest Supervisor's offices located in Helena and Great Falls to oversee forest management in 17 counties.”

It is Salmon season along the Columbia River! Look for tribal sites to purchase your salmon while traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail!

Buying fresh Columbia River chinook salmon:

The Columbia River is known for its distinctly flavored, rich red chinook salmon, also called king salmon. For thousands of years, the Columbia has been home to coho, sockeye, chum and steelhead salmon as well as chinook. (See Columbia River Salmon Species) And for thousands of years, the Yakama, Warm Springs, Umatilla and Nez Perce Indians have harvested these fish for commercial purposes and for physical and spiritual sustenance.

Today, the Columbia River is the only place in the Northwest where you can share in this historical Indian Salmon Harvest. Tribal fishers can be seen fishing from small boats and from scaffolds with long handled dip nets, as their ancestors did centuries ago. During the late spring, summer and fall, the public can purchase premium Columbia River chinook, coho, steelhead, and sockeye directly from Indian fishers. The fish is fresh, reasonably priced, and can be purchased already cleaned from some vendors.

Buying Indian-caught salmon directly from the river is a tradition that non-Indians started participating in some 200 years ago, about the time Lewis and Clark passed through the Columbia Basin. Over-the-bank salmon sales help Indian fishers support their families and make it possible for them to continue their traditional livelihood.

About The Expo:

“The National Park Service's Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail presents to you the first, Lewis and Clark Expo! This expo is a FREE family friendly event that will host several organizations.

Highlighting this event, the Lewis & Clark Discovery Expedition of Saint Charles, Missouri is bringing a one-of-a-kind replica Keelboat and their team of dedicated reenactors to the Omaha Riverfront. This full-scale replica Keelboat is based on the drawings by Captain William Clark and has been showcased in several films, documentaries, and televised miniseries.

The reenactors will be teaching heritage through living history, recreating the buckskin and uniform dress of 1804, sleeping under canvas, cooking over campfires, and so many more educational demonstrations.

This fun and educational event will include several free exhibits, demonstrations, and entertainment from a number of organizations including the National Park Service.
