Nestled in the beautiful Lemhi Valley with the Beaverhead Mountains looming over, the small town of Salmon holds a unique place in United States history. Known for its world class whitewater rafting and fishing along the Salmon River, Salmon is also the presumed birthplace of Sacajawea and the traditional homelands of the Agaidika Shoshone-Bannock people.
The Corps of Discovery would pass through Lemhi County and meet with the Agaidika, hoping to secure horses as well as explore the Salmon River, known as âThe River of No Returnâ- aptly named as Clark retraced his steps to look for a safer route after viewing the mighty river. Today, Salmon boasts welcoming accommodations, delicious restaurants, unique shops, and a gateway to the âRiver of No Return”. Located along the Lewis and Clark Trail, Salmon and Lemhi County offer historical attractions related to the Lewis and Clark expedition as well as sites of other historical interest.
