Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Visitor Center- “The Council was Held”

The Interpretive Gardens located at the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Headquarters located in Omaha, Nebraska commemorates the journey of Lewis and Clark. The Lewis and Clark expedition stopped in this area, which was once middle Missouri early in their journey. While here, the Corps of Discovery held a council and presented gifts to the Otoe and Missouria tribes while communicating through an interpreter. This was the first of many exchanges between the Corps of Discovery and tribes as the expedition went on to cross the territories of more than 100 native tribes.

Exhibits at the Lewis and Clark headquarters provide visitors with opportunities to learn more about the interactions Lewis and Clark had with the natives at the beginning of their trek west. Located along the Missouri River, this is the perfect place for visitors to stop and stretch their legs by taking a walk across the Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge before heading to their next stop along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Park Rangers are always available at the visitor’s center to answer questions or recommend destinations located along the Lewis and Clark Trail.
