Yellowstone National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery located one mile north of Laurel, Yellowstone County, Montana, at 55 Buffalo Trail Road (state highway 532). It is administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, National Cemetery Administration. Spanning 10.5 acres, the cemetery began as a satellite of Black Hills National Cemetery in South Dakota. In 2015, it was placed under the supervision of Fort Logan National Cemetery as part of a reorganization within the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The cemetery is part of the Rural Veterans Burial Initiative, designed to address the needs of veterans in rural states. It became the first of eight smaller national burial grounds established through this initiative. The cemetery’s creation followed a grassroots effort in Yellowstone County, led by local veterans and civic leaders, who advocated for a veterans cemetery in the area due to the long distances to other burial sites. In 2006, voters approved a countywide levy to fund the cemetery, and it was dedicated in 2008, with its first interment taking place on December 8, 2008.
In 2014, the cemetery was designated as a national cemetery and renamed Yellowstone National Cemetery. The name reflects the region’s grandeur and honors the sacrifices of military veterans. The cemetery has undergone several enhancements, including the installation of additional crypts, columbaria, and signage, with the most recent construction projects completed in 2021.
