Placed on the courthouse lawn in Selby, South Dakota, the Veteran’s Memorial Park honors 1,223 men and women who fought for our country. The site features 6 black granite tablets featuring the names of the veterans as well as benches and 3 flag poles flying the American, VFW, and Legion flags. Originally, there were only plans for 4 of the granite tablets. Methods for paying for the memorial were put into effect in September 2001 through donations and with a charge of $60.00 per name. Individuals, businesses, organizations cities, towns, and Walworth County started donating, and as of May 1, 2002, $102,405.82 had been received. Because of the popularity of the project, two more granite tablets were added, bringing the total to the 6 that stand today. The granite was imported from Zimbabwe and the names were sandblasted on by Granite Inc, Aberdeen.
