Tower Rock Campground (Illinois)
Just upriver from Elizabethtown, Illinois is Tower Rock—an imposing cliff rising high above the Ohio River. Just days before Lewis and Clark passed by, contemporaneous travel Thomas Rodney commented on this “stupendious ridge of mountain rocks.” In the winter of 1807, Fortescue Cumming wrote:
“[O]n the right, is a hill with a remarkable face to the river, of perpendicular rocks of a reddish colour”
The Tower Rock Overlook can be reached via a short trail from the boat launch at Tower Rock Campground managed by the Shawnee National Forest, U.S. Forest Service. The campground is next to the river with plain sites that can accommodate tents and small trailers. There is a pit toilet, but no running water, electricity, or garbage receptacles.
This no-fee campground is open May 1 through December 15.
