Shippen-Wistar House
When Lewis met Caspar Wistar in 1803, he found an eminent physician and professor—popular with his students, beloved by his patients. Together Wistar and Thomas Jefferson worked on identifying the bones of the “Megalonyx ” and vaccinating against smallpox.
The Shippen-Wistar House became known for its hospitality to members of the American Philosophical Society and known for its “Wistar parties” which met there.
Today, the interior is open only to customers of the company currently occupying the building. The public is welcome to view the historic exterior and read the interpretive marker.
