The Newberry Library in Chicago, IL is a free research library open to the public. Boasting several world-class collections, it is important to the Lewis and Clark community because of some very important holdings in its Graff and Ayers Collections, which specialize in Western Americana.
Among the highlights are the original as well as the so-called “fair copy” of the journal kept in his hand by Joseph Whitehouse, one of the men on the Lewis & Clark Expedition. It is the only surviving journal written by a private, providing insights and experiences that differed from those of the captains and sergeants. The collection holds an account book of Capt. William Clark’s in which he listed whether the various members of the expedition were living or dead by the 1825-28 period covered by the book. The Newberry holds an original document signed by Clark that served as a passport in allowing Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuweid to travel up the Missouri River in 1833. Additionally, the Library has original volumes of various printings of the Expedition journals in multiple languages and well as other documents, books, articles, and ephemera pertaining to the Lewis & Clark Expedition.
A visitor would be well advised to consult the online catalog and make arrangements before arrival.
