The Neill Log House in Schenley Park in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Squirrel Hill was invited to be placed on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Experience website because of its historic connection to Meriwether Lewis. According to research done by the National Park Service, Lewis likely passed by the Neill log house on his last trip to Pittsburgh, when he was launching his keelboat from downtown Pittsburgh to begin his historic expedition, as detailed on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Experience website.

The Neill House is at present the easternmost entry and first stop on the map on the website, now linked to the homepage of the Squirrel Hill Historical Society (SHHS), https://squirrelhillhistory.org/lewis-and-clark-experience/. The Neill log house is the oldest existing residential structure in Pittsburgh, built in 1769. Although the house is featured in many Pittsburgh sightseeing guides, including the SHHS’s Driving Tour of Squirrel Hill, https://squirrelhillhistory.org/driving-tour-of-squirrel-hill/, its connection to Meriwether Lewis wasn’t known until recently. The connection has generated a collaboration of the SHHS with the Pittsburgh Department of Public Works and several local preservation groups to advocate for the care and future use of this historic house.
