Monkey Mountain Conservation Area managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation and the adjacent Missouri River Mitigation Project managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has over 2000 acres on a hill “too steep for even monkeys to climb.” The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed under these hills on July 8, 1804 and again on September 11, 1806. Pioneer settlement began primarily in 1836.
There are many trails and access points, and you will see views of the Missouri and Nodaway River valleys. Before settlement, the steep slopes were upland forest consisting mainly of bur oak, white oak, red oak, black walnut, American elm, hickory and basswood.
