The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, located in southeastern Montana, commemorates the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, fought on June 25-26, 1876. This historic battle, also known as “Custer’s Last Stand,” was a pivotal conflict between the U.S. Army’s 7th Cavalry, led by Lt. Col. George A. Custer, and the allied Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors, led by Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Gall. Visitors to the battlefield can explore key sites such as Last Stand Hill, where Custer and his men made their final stand, and the Indian Memorial, which honors the Native warriors who fought to defend their way of life. The Custer National Cemetery serves as a resting place for veterans from multiple conflicts, while the Deep Ravine Trail offers a short walk tracing key moments of the battle. A drive to the Reno-Benteen Battlefield reveals the site of Major Marcus Reno’s defensive stand. The visitor center and museum provide exhibits, artifacts, and an interpretive film, and park rangers offer historical talks to deepen visitors’ understanding of the battle. A self-guided driving tour allows exploration of important battlefield locations at one’s own pace.
