Visit Killdeer Mountain Battlefield State Historic Site!

Step back in time and explore the rich history of Killdeer Mountain Battlefield, the site of a significant battle fought on July 28, 1864 between troops commanded by General Sully and a gathering of Sioux Indians. This battle was part of a series of military reprisals following the US-Dakota War of 1862 in Minnesota. While the battle targeted a Sioux Indian trading village, many of the inhabitants were not involved in the previous conflict. Located eight and a half miles northwest of Killdeer, Dunn County, this historic battlefield offers visitors a chance to reflect on a pivotal moment in the history of Native American and U.S. military relations. The site, despite modern intrusions like roads, fences, farms, and oil wells, still retains much of its historic charm and beauty, set against the scenic Killdeer Mountains.
