Indian Post Office (46.5460, -114.9877) is an iconic stopping place on the Lolo Motorway. At nearly 7,000 feet in elevation, it’s 360º views of the Bitterroot Mountains are exceptional. Considered a sacred Native American site by many, you will also find ceremonial rock cairns here and other ceremonial objects. A primitive trail leads down to two lakes and a restored section of the Nee-Me-Poo trail has a trailhead here.
Note: Forest Road 500, known as The Lolo Motorway, is a primitive, winding road through remote country that demands a high degree of self-sufficiency and the right vehicle. Average car speed is between 5 and 10 MPH, and ATVs and motorcycles are better suited for the conditions. Be sure to read “Lewis & Clark on the Lolo Trail” before beginning.
