Grinder’s Stand was a frontier inn and trading post located along the historic Natchez Trace near present-day Hohenwald, Tennessee. It is best known as the place where Meriwether Lewis, co-leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, died under mysterious circumstances on October 11, 1809, while traveling to Washington, D.C.
Its proprietors were Robert Evans Griner and Priscilla Knight Griner. The establishment is properly “Griner’s Stand”, given the proprietors. Soon after it opened, people began calling it “Grinder’s Stand”, and it stuck.
At the time, Grinder’s Stand was a remote stopover for travelers making the long journey between Nashville and Natchez. Lewis, then Governor of the Louisiana Territory, was reportedly suffering from illness and emotional distress. He died of gunshot wounds during the night; questions about the cause of his death persist.
Today, the site includes a reconstructed log cabin, a visitor area, and the Meriwether Lewis Monument and gravesite, maintained by the National Park Service.
