Head out on this 2.5-mile loop trail near West Alton, Missouri. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 45 min to complete. This trail is great for birding, hiking, and mountain biking, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.
Ellis Island is actually a peninsula between the Mississippi River and a large backwater area that is part of the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary. It is a combination of gravel access road and dirt foot paths. It meanders between grassland area in the middle of the loop and a narrow strip of forest along the water. There are a couple bird blinds along the trail.
