Three Forks to Billings
Clark's 1806 Return

Three Forks to Billings
Trip Summary

Number of stops: 5

Total distance:

July 13, 1806 at the headwaters of the MissouriSgt. Ordway and nine others head down the Missouri in the dugout canoesClark and those remaining in his group head up the Gallatin River valley on horses. Sacagawea recommends they head to present Bozeman Pass.

Clark is heading downstream and as such makes significant daily mileage versus the 1805 struggle against the current.  He is looking in vain for trees large enough to construct dugout canoes.  The horses are lame and he directs the men to make buffalo hide moccasins to ease their journey.  On July 19th he reaches present day Laurel, Montana and rests at Canoe Camp.

had handles put in the 3 Axes and after Sharpening them with a file fell the two trees which I intended for the two Canoes. those trees appeared tolerably Sound and will make Canoes of 28 feet in length and about 16 or 18 inches deep and from 16 to 24 inches wide.
—William Clark

On the Yellowstone River below present Billings, Montana, Clark names a rock Pompy’s Tower after Jean Baptiste Charbonneau—now known as Pompeys Pillar—and then, he carves his name and date into the rock.
