Stop 1: Sergeant Floyd Memorial

Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only confirmed Kentucky-born member of the “nine young men from Kentucky,” joined the Lewis and Clark Expedition on August 1, 1803. He quickly proved himself dependable and was appointed sergeant on April 1, 1804. As a sergeant, he kept a journal, first mentioning his illness on July 31, 1804. Though he briefly improved, his condition worsened by August 19. Clark stayed with him through the night but could do nothing.

On August 20, Floyd passed away with composure, asking Clark to write a letter. The Corps buried him with full military honors on a high bluff overlooking the Missouri River, naming the nearby river and bluffs in his memory. Captain Lewis read the funeral service, and a cedar post marked his grave. It is believed Floyd died from peritonitis due to a ruptured appendix.
