On October 26, 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark boarded their military barge and for the first time during the expedition, moved as a team down the Ohio River. Completely on the Kentucky side of the river, this trip meanders to the northern tip of the “Big Bend” and stops in historic river towns. Create your own voyage of the “corps of volunteers for North West Discovery” between Louisville and Owensboro, Kentucky.

Featuring both a museum and the Center for Humanity and Justice, the Muhammad Ali Center is an important place to visit for visitors in the Louisville area. Exhibits throughout the museum include timelines of his boxing career and a recreation of his Deer Lake training center.
The center is open from Wednesday through Sunday 10am to 5pm with prices for adults being $20 with additional discounts for youth and seniors.

Slow down, pause, and reflect on the road less traveled! Going to—or at least past—Mt. Hope Church takes you along a 20-mile loop on the Ohio River’s narrow Big Bend. This quaint church and cemetery has over 150 headstones—many dating between 1850 and 1900.
After your visit, continue on Big Bend Road which will loop you take you back to the highway junction just south of Battletown.
At Yellowbank Wildlife Management Area, wildlife is the main attraction. It is considered by locals as a great place to hike, hunt, camp, and fish. There are several access points other the end of Chenault Road, so be sure to check the Kentucky Fish & Wildlife webpage for options and current usages: app.fw.ky.gov/public_lands_search/detail.aspx?Kdfwr_id=192.
Owensboro is Kentucky’s “Festival City” specializing in bluegrass, bourbon, and BBQ. Stroll through Smothers Park and let the kids play in the award-winning Lazy Days playground. Or cut a rug at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum. Whatever you do, have a meal at the city called the “BBQ Capital of the World.”
