Explore the Heinz History Center: Pittsburgh’s L Explore the Heinz History Center: Pittsburgh’s Lewis & Clark Legacy

Did you know the Lewis and Clark Expedition began in Pittsburgh? On August 31, 1803, Meriwether Lewis launched his 55-foot keelboat, marking the start of the Corps of Discovery's historic journey westward.

The Heinz History Center, Pennsylvania’s largest history museum and a Smithsonian affiliate, brings this story to life through the exhibit Rediscovering Lewis & Clark: A Journey with the Rooney Family. This unique display intertwines the original expedition's narrative with the Rooney family's modern retracing of the route, offering a compelling perspective on this monumental journey.

Located in Pittsburgh's historic Strip District, the museum spans six floors, featuring exhibits on regional innovations, sports history, and cultural heritage. Since Lewis's departure, Pittsburgh has transformed from a frontier town into a hub of industry and innovation, now celebrated for its contributions to technology, healthcare, and education.

Embark on a journey through time and discover how Pittsburgh played a pivotal role in shaping American history.

In collaboration with Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and NEW Multimedia, Big Medicine:York Outdoors follows a group of Black adventurers on a transformative four-day river journey along the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in Montana. This expedition retraces the path of the original Corps of Discovery while connecting York’s legacy to the joy, healing, and empowerment that the great outdoors can provide.

Explore Bellefontaine Cemetery: A Resting Place of Explore Bellefontaine Cemetery: A Resting Place of Legends

Tucked away in St. Louis, Bellefontaine Cemetery is a peaceful and historic resting place with deep ties to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Most notably, it’s where explorer William Clark is buried. A towering 35-foot granite obelisk, erected in 1904, marks his grave.

Founded in 1849, Bellefontaine became the final resting place for many of St. Louis’s most influential figures. In addition to Clark, you’ll find graves of Adolphus Busch (Anheuser-Busch co-founder), poet Sara Teasdale, author William S. Burroughs, and Luther Ely Smith, who helped inspire the Gateway Arch. The cemetery spans over 300 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, with winding roads, historic monuments, and stunning trees.

Though Clark died in 1838, his grave was moved here in the 1850s, making Bellefontaine a significant site for anyone interested in the legacy of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The cemetery is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and offers public tours, walking paths, and special events year-round.

A visit to Bellefontaine isn’t just a walk through a cemetery - it’s a journey through the stories of the people who shaped early American history.
