Throughout Montana’s history, the Montana Historical Society has acquired over 1.25 million photographs in thousands of collections. Together, these images document the myriad lives and landscapes of the Treasure State’s history. Photograph archives manager Jeff Malcomson will share what the Montana Historical Society photo archives are all about and reveal compelling examples from four of their major collections.

Experience the Dignity Statue in Chamberlain, South Dakota!

Perched on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near Chamberlain, the Dignity of Earth & Sky statue is a breathtaking tribute to the Lakota and Dakota peoples. This magnificent 50-foot-tall stainless steel sculpture depicts a Native American woman adorned in a traditional 1850s-style dress, gracefully holding a star quilt featuring 128 stainless steel blue diamond shapes that shimmer in the sunlight and ripple with the wind.

While the Lewis and Clark Expedition traversed this region in the early 1800s, the landscape has transformed from untouched prairies to developed areas with modern amenities. Today, visitors can appreciate both the natural beauty and cultural landmarks like the Dignity statue that now enhance the area.

Fun Fact: The statue was designed by South Dakota artist Dale Lamphere and unveiled in 2016 to honor the state's 125th anniversary.

Adjacent to the statue, the Chamberlain Rest Area houses a Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, offering exhibits and information about the expedition's journey through the region. The Chamberlain Welcome Center operates seven days a week from mid-May through October, with daily hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Restroom facilities remain accessible year-round.
